Morning folks!
Starting today, Ancestry.com is offering FREE* access to its millions of U.S. Civil War era records for one week only. This includes the 1860 and 1870 census records**. The records are available for free from April 7 - 14, 2011.
The official access page is here: http://www.ancestry.com/civilwar150
However, you can access them through your normal search methods. My paid subscription recently ran out, so all of my "shaking leaf" hints lead me to record names with no information. When I click the leaf now, the 1860 census hit still does not show any detail. If I actually click on the link though, it will take me to the 1860 census record, which is completely visible for the week. So don't be discouraged if your hints still seem to not let you access Civil War era records; you just have to actually click the links to go to the records themselves to get information. If you do a general census search outside of your family tree, the results will not block the information like they are blocked in your "shaking leaf" hints. You can see the basic information right away without clicking on the hit to view the index/record.
Happy hunting!
*I was SO excited to have access to these free records when I first found out- well, I still am! But there's a catch. While you can save the record to your "shoebox" or even to your computer (yay!), you cannot attach the record to your online tree at Ancestry.com. Bummer.
**Of course, you can get the 1860 and 1870 U.S. census records free every day at FamilySearch. This are just examples of the Civil War era records now available on Ancestry. I'm about to scope the whole collection out myself.
